Commonly Experienced Problems When Using CPAP

Irritation of the eyes

  • Mask may not be properly positioned. Try reapplying mask and adjusting headgear straps.
  • Mask may be the wrong size or the wrong style for your facial profile
  • Mask leaks due to the position of your head on your pillow when sleeping on your side. Try laying your head on the edge of your pillow to help prevent the mask from moving.

Skin irritation and marking

  • Mask headgear may be too tight. Readjust mask and headgear so that it is only tight enough to prevent leaks while still maintaining a comfortable fit.
  • Try adjusting the spacer to relieve pressure from the bridge of the nose. Not all masks have this adjustment option.
  • Mask is the wrong size. If your mask is not the proper size it may cause additional pressure to the sides or bridge of your nose.
  • Mask may be causing an allergic reaction. CPAP masks are made of silicon and some patients may have problems.

Experiencing discomfort from pressure:

  • This can be a common problem when first starting CPAP therapy. Usually after 1-2 weeks patients are able to better tolerate the CPAP pressure. CPAP machines that have the EPR feature can provide better comfort.

Nasal and Throat Dryness:

  • Caused by reaction to the airflow, allergies, or common cold
  • Caused by lack of humidity. Humidifiers that connect to the CPAP unit can help to prevent nasal, mouth, and throat dryness.
  • Caused by breathing through your mouth while using CPAP. The mouth and throat can become dry and irritated if you frequently open your mouth while sleeping. A chin strap or full face mask may be required.
